Is your ladder leaning on the right wall?

Anyone who’s tried to set up an Internet business knows that
it is hard work, certainly in the early days.

The most useful weapon against failure is persistence, the
refusal to give up, when results are going against you.

In real terms this means continuing to spend money on your
Business, even though you are not making a profit.

Take a look at many large businesses, they don’t make any
profit for years after they are set up - yet they, and their
backers persist in spite of losses in the early years. You
can do the same.

Climbing the ladder of success will test your persistence to
the limit, but there’s one question you need to ask yourself
right now …

Is your ladder leaning on the right wall ?

In a moment I’m going to explain exactly what that means,
but first, do you have a plan? do you know where you expect
to be a week from now? in a years time?, five years?

Well do you?

So back to ladders and walls …

I’m a Financial Planner, and I’ve talked to thousands of
people over the years about their dreams and aspirations,
both financial, and personal.

Some of my clients are very driven. Persistence is their
middle name, but here’s a trend I’m beginning to see more
and more ….

After 20 years of working their way up the corporate ladder
they’ve made it. They have a good salary, but their children
have gone to university before they really knew them, they
feel like a stranger to their wife, and they are
dissatisfied. What’s more, unless they turn up to work every
day, they don’t get paid.

In short they feel trapped, by their own success.

Other clients have worked equally hard on their careers,
only to find that their salary is half that of someone who
works in a different industry.

The one thing that they both have in common is that after
many years of persistence, they both want to leave their
current employers, and do something different. The first
because he feels unfulfilled despite success, and the second
because he feels undervalued, despite success.

They have both climbed the ladder of success, only to find
that the ladder was leaning on the wrong wall…

So what lessons can be learned from these "successful"
people and how can their experiences help us as Internet
marketers ?

First, when you make your plan, start with your desired
destination as the goal, then work out how to get there.

If you desire freedom, real freedom, set your business up
from the start, in a way that will achieve that aim, namely
passive income, or preferably, a number of passive income
streams.

This might point you in the direction of multiple mini-sites
utilising RSS feeds and Adsense for example. It probably
will not include setting up a membership site with a weekly
newsletter, and a moderated forum.

On the other hand, if you really want to be involved every
day a membership site might be just the thing you’re looking
for.

Second, when you look at any business opportunity, figure
out what your life will be like if that business is
successful. There are as many ways to make money as there
are people on earth, with persistence, any sensible venture
will pay off for you.

Be sure at the outset that the direction you will be
heading in, is where you really want to go.

Make sure that your ladder is leaning on the right wall.
